I came across some art by Stacy Drum and everything about it clicked for me. I wanted to share. I reached out to her and she agreed to let me post some of her works.
Many of her works have scifi or horror tones to them. My eye was caught by this oil painting of an ominous Lovecraftian image of an underwater stone statue that is somehow simply existing in the middle of the depths. Is it an image of Dagon? A Deep One? Something else entirely? Who knows. The addition of a scuba diver gives the statue scale, and sets the time period as something more modern that classic Lovecraft tales. This is a great mysterious piece that feels like it should be the cover of a Call Of Cthulhu module book.

An equally evocative but of a different tone, this image shows fog obscured starships being observed by a lone deer. The zee-rust design of the ships calls to mind classic scifi of the 1950s or 60s. There is no clue as to the nature of the pilots. Are they human or alien? Is this first contact for earth, or the routine lift off of a manmade vessel?

This piece is eye catching for the sharp shapes, and thought provoking on closer look that reveals the spindly creatures have riders. That simple addition suggests a backstory and a world. There is something very Kenshi toned in seeing mammoth alien creatures being casually commanded by riders in rice hats.

The last example is Stacy’s take on Hellboy. Many of her other works include Lovecraft riffs, so Hellboy fits right in. She keeps the wide sillioute that Mignola often draws a trenchcoat clad Hellboy with while detailing it with her own style. In place of Migolas constant straight edges and deep shadows, Stacy’s rendition has more gently rounded shapes and smooth, paintery shading. The important attitude with the facial expression is kept, and somehow she managed to increase the size of Hellboy’s handgun compared to Mignola.

Stacy has tons of other works to view, and for sale on her website, so if you enjoyed these pictures go take a look and maybe you’ll end up with something new to hang on your wall.
