I managed to stumble through several airports and make it to this year’s Richmond Open convention. The event took over the Richmond agricultural center and had tables for everything for 15mm ancient historicals being played by grogs in medieval attire, to competative Warhammer 40k games being livestreamed.
I took a ton of photos to give a feel for the event. In this post I’ve cut down to just a handful, but there are also links to Imgur albums with more. Even with that extra hosting, I had to cut out so many of the 1000+ pictures I took of amazing hobby things, there were just so many people showing off so much cool stuff. Enjoy a this visual tour of the event.

Marvel Crisis Protocol is one of the hot games for people who like small figure count, high variety hero games. One player’s team caught my eye with his high contrast shaded minis sitting atop bases mean to mimic action panels from comicbooks.

This Venom-Hulk was unique. I’m pretty sure it’s a Trident Miniatures 3D sculpt, but the face is more Venom than the default. This looks like a unique mod to the 3D print. (Unless somebody has this version of the file to prove me wrong…)

The full team along with the Venom-Hulk

Some classic Iron Winds Battletech minis were on display in front of a merch booth.

A games company was demonstrating their 6mm/15mm scifi ruleset on a gorgeous 6mm scaled city setup. The game is called polyversal, so if you’re interested, here is the website.

Warhammer The Old World had a big chunk of tables, with players bringing their armies on display boards, and many of them with written backstories to check out while gawking at the paintjobs.

Vaporwave Bretonians were visible from across the room.

Lord Of The Rings players were also out playing both standard games, and large narrative events. Some of the Lord Of The Rings terrain on it’s own was impressive even before armies started fighting over it.

All day, multi-stage battles from Tolkien’s works were ongoing.
Fantasy albums part 1 and part 2. So much great stuff inside.

Historical battles also had a huge outing. This convention specific game using large scale figures defending a medieval castle wall was a crowd pleaser.

A table over, the battle of Gettysburg was being recreated as teams of players took the roles of various Union and Confederate commanders.

WW2 was represented with Bolt Action. Full album.

At last, Warhammer 40k which was far and away the most popular game had a huge crowd representing it.

Ablums showing off 30k and 40k miniatures: Part 1 and part 2.

Odds and ends. A small company was demonstrating their 30mm game, Breachstorm.

Star Wars armada was being played, with some possible timeline muddying.

An absolutely table crushing Super Stardestroyer.

And at last, in the corner some dedicated grogs were running a nice comfy coop game.
